The Transfer Process
Transferring to a university can be intimidating, but by utilizing the variety of resources available at community colleges and planning carefully, the process can be simplified greatly and your odds of admission will go way up. All community colleges offer counseling services, many of which include specialized counselors for student athletes, first-generation students, veterans, STEM majors, adult re-entry students, and more. Also, most community colleges have Transfer Centers with skilled staff who can help you research, plan, and follow through on your transfer goals.
- In Your First Semester: Meet with a counselor to create an education plan, attend a transfer fair, and attend a transfer information workshop. If you haven’t chosen a major, the sooner you do so, the easier it will be to plan properly for transfer and graduation. File the FAFSA to see about grants, scholarships, and loans.
- By the End of Your First Year: Research universities, meet with their reps, and tour some campuses. Look for scholarships and grants. Meet with a counselor again to update your goals and education plan.
- Beginning of Your Second Year: Many universities, especially CSU & UC schools, require applications up to a year in advance, so it may be time to apply! Attend application, personal statement, and “After You’ve Applied” workshops for help in this process. Meet with your counselor for a progress check and to update your plan.
- By the End of Your Second Year: Thoroughly read all messages from the universities and follow instructions carefully! Request transcripts and test records as needed. Update your financial info to include your potential destination schools. Meet with a counselor for a progress check and for help with graduation and G.E. certification forms.
